Meet Our Keynote Speakers

Carolyn (Carrie) Brennan

Carolyn (Carrie) Brennan is an associate professor of early childhood education at Western Washington University. She began her career as a toddler teacher in a Reggio Emelia inspired classroom and now teaches courses focused on socially just approaches to working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families. Her research examines early childhood teacher preparation, is informed (with gratitude) by feminisms of color, and focuses on relationships and power in the classroom, the role of teacher self-reflection, and strategies for supporting developing teachers.
Carolyn earned a PhD in Learning Sciences & Human Development from the University of Washington and an advanced nursing certificate in infant mental health from the Barnard Center for Infant Mental Health.

Charlene Montaño Nolan

Charlene Montaño Nolan is an assistant professor in the Early Childhood Education program at Western Washington University. She began her career as an early childhood teacher in infant, toddler, and preschool classrooms. She now teaches and studies with critical play-based and place-based, Indigenous land based, and culturally thriving pedagogies to enhance early childhood learning environments. Charlene earned her Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and Human Development from the University of Washington.
